USMEF EXPECTS MORE GROWTH FOR U.S. PORK IN MEXICO

Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, says Mexico’s demand for American pork has been surging. “Number one, the economy is relatively strong,” he said. “Number two, we had a U.S. dollar exchange rate that, unlike the Asian countries, is actually a little weaker against the peso, which helped us.”

He tells Brownfield’s that especially impressive because the market attracted new competition over the past two years. “And, the fact that you have foodservices back well beyond what it was in pre-COVID levels, in Mexico in particular. That combined with the retail that has been strong all along.”

USDA data shows the U.S. share of Mexico’s imported pork market increased in 2023, reaching 84%.
