Avian influenza resurfaces in Alberta poultry

This is the first commercial poultry flock in the province to be infected since December 2023.

Canadian officials reported the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial poultry flock in Alberta for 2024.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the presence of the virus was confirmed in a commercial flock in Mountain View County, Alberta, on February 19. CFIA did not disclose information concerning the type of flock or how many birds were involved.

While there was a confirmed case of HPAI in a non-commercial poultry flock on February 9, this is the first instance of HPAI infecting birds in a commercial operation in the province since it was confirmed in Taber, Alberta, on December 8, 2023.

Alberta had 10 flocks affected by HPAI in 2023 and 27 affected in 2022.

This marks the fourth commercial poultry flock in Canada to be hit by HPAI in 2024. Of the other three, two were in Quebec and the other was in Ontario.
