Beef imports fall but remains up on 2022 levels
Fresh/frozen beef imports were down 780 tonnes (t) from May, sitting at 19,450t for June. However, total imports for June 2023 were up 310t from June 2022.
AHDB’s latest analysis of the UK beef trade in June found that shipments of fresh/frozen beef from Ireland grew 750t as shipments from Germany fell 580t, when compared to the same period in 2022.
Total exports for June were at 8,400t, increasing nearly 500t from May. Following June 2022, export volumes were down 1,500t. Areas lacking in trade were France (-600t), the Netherlands (-340t) and Ireland (-150t). According to AHDB, this is a result of weaker domestic demand in Europe and strong cattle prices, with consumers struggling with the cost of living.
However, growth was seen in exports from places such as Hong Kong (up 150t) when compared to levels in May.
GB beef price decreases slow
GB prime cattle and cow prices decreased in August, slowing towards the week ending 12th August. The GB all-prime average deadweight price decreased by 3p from the week before, but increased 21p from June 2022, leaving the current price at 453p/kg.
Domestic production levels have fluctuated around levels seen in 2022, and while the majority of imports and exports remain below June 2022 levels, an increase in imports from Ireland have raised them to sit slightly above June 2022 levels.
